String Holders > Black Americana

Black memorabilia is without a doubt a field that encompasses the most widely exploited group in our history. Within the field there are many levels of interest: arts and achievements such as folk music and literature, caricatures in advertising, souvenirs, toys, fine art and legitimate research into the days of their enslavement and enduring struggle for equality. The list is endless. Many items have a derogatory connotation. Thankfully these are from a bygone era and represent the mores of a culture that existed nearly a century ago. Collectors today have a genuine interest in the many varied items not to be demeaning but rather as historic value - less we forget the past!

These days we take cellophane tape for granted. Before it was invented, string was used to tie up packages. String Holders became a staple item in the home kitchen. To add to a whimsical touch, in the late 1920s and 1930s, many string holders were presented as human shapes, faces, animals and fruits. Most of these novelty string holders were made of chalkware (plaster of Paris), ceramics or wood fiber. If you were lucky, you might have won a plaster of Paris ‘Super Hero’ or comic character string holder at your local carnival. These prizes were known as ‘carnival chalkware’. The Indian string holder was a popular giveaway; so was Betty Boop, Howdy Doody and Mickey Mouse.

"Help! Help!" Black Americana String Holder This very collectible Vintage Black Americana String Holder called "Help! Help!" was produced in the 1940s by a small company now out of business in Paducah, Kentucky: Keystone Studio (see the additional photo of one of their ads). It measures 9" high and is made of chalk. Its paint is original and it is in very good condition - having no chips or cracks. But remember this is chalk ware and it does show slight crazing due to age. Also this being chalk ware there are imperfections that are characteristic of items that are made of chalk. It still has its original wire hanger on the back for hanging on the wall. There is a place in the back for a ball of twine. The string comes out the ball of twine. Incised on the bottom is KS77" (see the additional photos). While I do not agree with the production of this string holder, it is a piece of legitimate Black American History and is therefore collectible. If you are a collector of string holders or black Americana you will want this one!
A copy of the original ad showing this string holder will be given to the buyer.

I purchased it in Bloomington, Illinois in 1971 along with several other Black Americana items in a small collection. It has hung in a smoke free home for years and later packed away for many more. We are in the process of unpacking many boxes of collectibles and will be offering many as we locate them. Here is your chance to own not only a piece of history but a terrific collectible! Thank you for looking!

It measures 9" high and is made of chalk. Its paint is original and it is in very good condition - having no chips or cracks. It still has its original wire hanger on the back for hanging on the wall. There is a place in the back for a ball of twine. The string comes out of his stomach. We just unpacked this fantastic advertising string holder that was one of several that belonged to my late aunt who got me started collecting many years ago. During the past 40 years that I have been collecting I have only seen a very, very few of these. We are just now unpacking much of what she had collected over the last 30 to 70 years. It had hung in a smoke free home/antique shop for years and then packed away. If you collect string holders or Black memorabilia then you will definitely want this one! Here is your chance to own not only a piece of history but a terrific collectible! Thank you for looking.
