This very collectible Vintage "Little Black Sambo" Black Americana String Holder was produced in 1943 by a small company now out of business in Paducah, Kentucky: Keystone Studio (see the additional photo of one of their ads). It measures 8 1/2" high and is made of chalk. Its paint is original and it is in very good condition - having no chips or cracks. But remember this is chalk ware and it does show slight crazing due to age. Also this being chalk ware there are imperfections that are characteristic of items that are made of chalk. It still has its original wire hanger on the back for hanging on the wall. There is a place in the back for a ball of twine. The string comes out of his mouth. Incised on the top is "Copyright 1943 SAMBO" (see the additional photos). While I do not agree with the production of this string holder, it is a piece of legitimate Black American History and is therefore collectible. If you are a collector of string holders or Black Americana you will want this one! |
